Firstlight’s Isabelle Demaude is working as a volunteer at the equestrian events.
Two shifts down with eight more to go. The buzz at Greenwich Park is incredible. I’ll admit, I was never particularly into equestrian events up until now (even less so when I was told I’d need to wake up at 5am to make my shifts), but whether it’s seeing riders come off their horses at cross country, or simply the explosion of applause following the suspense at dressage, there’s plenty of action keeping us on the edge of our seats.
As for the volunteering, it’s chaotic, but only in the best sense of the term. In the mornings, as the team leaders split us into groups, the enthusiasm is staggering. 7am with only a coffee and a granola bar down us, everyone is ‘rearing’ to go. It’s fantastic to see so many people come together with no other goal in mind than to create something great and memorable.
Not to say there aren’t a few extra perks! We do get hot meals, we do get to see some of the events, and occasionally, we walk straight past Zara Phillips and Mary King!
Now we only need to pray the weather holds!
